Yesterday when we were in the area office Sister Button had a bad cold, so decided to make her some chicken soup today - that is the cure-all for colds, isn't it? Then decided to bake some cookies to take so I spent a good part of the day cooking. Heating the kitchen (small as it is) up with the oven made for a very sweaty experience! Great thing was I finally figured out how this oven works.
I have been so discouraged with this language stuff. You study and study and then realize that what you have learned isn't even a drop in the bucket. The only people you can communicate with are Americans - except for a phrase here and there with patient Dominicans.
We received an email from Elder Hammon this morning that gave percentages of people being robbed here. 62% of the crime is men on motor bikes or bikes that come through places where people are walking and grab whatever is visible and of any worth on your body. He actually had someone take his phone last night as he got out of the car - his phone was in a holder on his belt. Many of them carry guns. That's why they tell you never to carry a purse with anything in you would miss if it was stolen.
Between that and our apartment building being on total lock down, I'm getting a little nervous. You can't even take the garbage out here without having a key to open the big gate the cars go through because the small gate you used to be able to walk through is now locked all of the time. Then the door to our building that used to be open is locked. They never have determined who killed the lady here in our apartments - don't think they even have a clue. But we have more guards so I guess that is good. Some of the guards look a little scary themselves though.
We got to our Spanish class and there were a few things I understood so that was better than last time. Then went to the temple. I listen so carefully to the Spanish along with the English headsets that I am pretty confused by the time the session is over. When Jake used to write home and his spelling got worse and worse I didn't really understand what was going on. Now I do!
It has rained here again today. I'm surprised there isn't mildew all over.
Scott was waiting for me to finish so he could pull up Fox news but he gave up and went to bed. That's probably good because the news isn't usually very uplifting...
